Are You Interested in Serving on the UFCW Michigan Active Ballot Club Committee?

As you know, 2010 will be a very busy year politically in Michigan, as we will be electing a new Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, as well as delegations to Congress, and the State Legislature. Furthermore, UFCW Locals 951 and 876 are committed to work together to promote a unified legislative and political agenda that has the best interests of you and your union sisters and brothers.

With so many offices up for election this year, and so many important issues facing both our state and our nation, we would like your input on who the United Food and Commercial Workers of Michigan should endorse for statewide offices. To best serve our members, UFCW MI would like to know if you are interested in serving on the Active Ballot Club Screening Committee.

Health Care Reform is Everyone's Responsibility
Let's Finish Reform Right

To finish the job and deliver a health reform bill that meets the needs of America’s families, we are urging members of the UFCW to contact their representative to let them know that they and conference leaders must resolve a number of critical outstanding issues. These issues may be summarized under two goals:

1. Make GOOD health care affordable
Low and middle income families must be able to afford health insurance, and employers must be asked to provide good health coverage for their employees so health care is affordable at work. Health care should not be paid for with a tax on health benefits.

2. Hold insurance companies accountable
If the insurance companies win, we lose. Insurance companies must be held accountable with strong regulations and consumer protections, and we must be given the choice of a national public health insurance option available on day one across the United States.

The Senate bill cannot be the final bill sent to President Obama's desk for his signature. Below are several methods you can convey this message yourself.

Right to Work for Less

In Work for Less States
... Workers earn an average of $5,333 less annually
... 21 percent more people go without health insurance
... The rate of workplace deaths is 51 percent higher
... Workers’ Compensation is an average of $30 a week less
