UFCW Lobby Day 2008
A Landmark Achievement for the Union and the State of
Michigan
Lobby Day participants from
both our local and Local 951 met
at the Local 876 office and took a bus to the State Capitol
on Thursday, May 15 where they received a briefing on
current legislative issues, lobbied their elected officials
on workers' issues, had lunch with legislators and sat-in on
sessions in both the Senate and House.
Michael J.
Wilson, International Vice President and Director with the
Legislative and Political Action Department of the UFCW
International Union addressed the group, "The Lobby Day by
both Michigan locals is a landmark achievement - for our
union and for the state of Michigan. I don't just say that
as a native Michiganian, but as the International Vice
President and Director of the union's legislative and
political work. To see the gold shirts representing the
broad expanse of our members from across the state seated in
the gallery and acknowledged by the state legislature is to
witness a tangible example of our power at the heart of
state government. Other states should take heed of the
significance of this effort which is a concrete example of
"One Union, One Voice." I salute both Local 876 President
Roger Robinson and Local 951 President Marv Russow for their
solidarity and the members of both locals for making the
Lobby Day a success."
