Oakland County Members Sent Discount Card
Local 876 members living in Oakland County were mailed a Membership Discount Card during March, as UFCW Michigan's trial discount program was extended to a second county. Last year, members living in Macomb County received their discount card.
"We are continually looking for ways to add value to Local 876 membership," Roger Robinson, Local 876's president said. "Members expressed an interest in receiving discounts, so we are exploring a local discount program."
The union contacted thousands of merchants in both Macomb and Oakland County soliciting discounts for UFCW members. Many local merchants agreed to provide discounts, joining national vendors already participating in the program.
All available discounts, automotive, health and beauty, gifts and shopping to financial services, can be viewed and secured online at ufcwmrc.org, by using the member specific issued ID number and password printed on the backside of the discount card. Along with their card, members received a letter with detailed instructions on how to access these discounts.
"Members in Macomb and Oakland County are encouraged to go online and familiarize themselves with this program and its money saving benefits and encourage others to do so." Robinson said.
Also, we are very interested in members' experiences with this program, both good and bad, as we will use this input to determine if the program is expanded to the entire membership next year."
Members with questions regarding the program or who need a replacement card, can call the union office, extension 8653.
Union Plus
To add extra value to union membership, over 20 years ago, the AFL-CIO created Union Privilege, a not-for-profit organization offering consumer benefits to retired and active union members and their families. "With the Union Plus programs, members and their family receive union member only rates, so members won't find the savings and benefits associated with the Union Plus programs anywhere else. Plus, Union Plus programs are designed specifically for union members with discounts and special features, like skip payments and financial assistance in the event of a disability or layoff."
Many members are currently taking advantage of one or more of the Union Plus programs, and several have won Union Plus Scholarships and First Time Home Buyers awards. However, Local 876 wants all members to know about the savings opportunities available to them through Union Plus.
Equally as important as the benefits provided through Union Plus, is the Union Plus Member Advocacy Program which helps members resolve any problems or concerns they may have with a Union Plus program. Members with a questions or issue can contact Union Plus Member Advocacy Programs at 1.800.472.2005 from 8:30 - 4:30 p.m.
"Members should feel confident about the Union Plus program, they will be in good hands, and have plenty of resources available to them through Union Plus," Robinson said.
